Down the catwalk in affordable fashion

Mar 31, 2011 | 6:18 AM

Dresses paraded down the runway Wednesday at Wesmor Community High School.

It was a fashion show of graduation dresses —both new and used that the girls at the high school can purchase for $25.

Carlene Morin, one of models, already has her graduation dress, but said it is great for some of the other girls at her high school.

“Some people can’t afford $500 dresses and these dresses are nice for $25,” she said.

Model Elizabeth Lavallee agrees.

“It used to be that you could just rent it for $25, but now they can buy it for $25 … I know there’s a lot of people out there who would enjoy this opportunity,” she said, adding she hasn’t purchased her dress yet and plans to see what there is available at the discounted price.

The show and program, “Wesmor Walks-the-Walk” was organized by teachers Kathy Nagy and Janis Sawa.

“The purpose of it is to show these dresses that we have, most of them are brand new – some of them have been worn once, those ones get professionally cleaned – and they are for sale for $25,” said Sawa.
Nagy said it’s something that is important for the graduates.

“They’ve worked so hard to get to this point and they want to be a princess and it’s their day to shine.

“Some of these dresses are $400 to $500 and some of these graduates have children and they just can’t afford that cost of the dress,” she said.

The community is behind them on project. Several dresses were donated by Treasures in White and Craft Haven, along with other services including dry cleaning and hairdos for the day.

There were even students from Carlton Comprehensive High School looking at the discounted gowns.

Amy Alook said she was having fun while trying them on and thought it would be great to be able to save the money.

It is the second year Wesmor has been collecting dresses and the first year the girls get to keep them.
