Carlton Comprehensive High School in Prince Albert had seven of their own in Regina over the weekend for Football Saskatchewan’s annual Senior Bowl.

This year marked the 40th edition of the prestigious game which acts as a high school all-star game, bringing together the top graduating football players from across the province for a North vs South 12-a-side matchup, with this year being played at Mosaic Stadium.

Carlton had a record number of participants in the game with with five player on Team North, including defensive lineman Emmanuel Azinta, defensive back Miller Childress, linebacker Colton Middlebrooks, running back Rylan Morrison, and wide receiver/kicker Zane Litzenberger. Carlton coaches Cole Puetz and Jordan Gabriel-Cannon were also named to Team North, along with École St. Mary player Simon Dube who represented the Marauders on the defensive side.

Litzenberger was a force for Team North during the game on Sunday, with a touchdown and two field goals to lead the North to a 44-11 victory. The 6’1”, 185-pound University of Regina commit also took home a pair of awards in the win, being named the North Team Most Outstanding Quarterback/Receiver and Most Valuable Player. Litzenberger is the just the second Crusader to be named the North MVP, following former teammate Tazmin Smith-Windsor who won it in 2023.

After the South took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, Litzenberger scored the first game’s first touchdown after hauling in a pass and taking it 42 yards to the house. Later in the half, the South regained the lead with a touchdown of their own to go up 11-7, before Litzenberger nailed a field goal with 26 seconds left in the second quarter to make it a one-point game at halftime.

Things were clicking for the North in the second half, as the offence couldn’t stop scoring and the defence didn’t let anything get by them.

With the North now up 20-11 late in the third quarter, Litzenberger nailed a 23-yard field goal, his second of the afternoon, to extend the lead before Saskatoon Holy Cross’ Treyon White caught a pick-six on the South’s very next offensive possession. St. Mary’s Dube also got in on the fun, snagging an interception over midfield to give the South their third of the quarter.

Now 37-11 with 25 seconds left in the game, Carlton’s Morrison added some more salt to the wound with a short three-yard touchdown run for his first and only score of the game, making the final score 44-11 for the North.

Aside from Saskatoon and Prince Albert, many other communities were represented in the Senior Bowl with Team North with athletes from North Battleford, Humboldt, Meadow Lake and Melfort.
