Public inquest to look at Lee Bonneau’s murder
It was a tragic death that captured national attention, and in two weeks, details in the killing of Lee Bonneau are going to be put on the table for all to see.
A public inquest into the death has been called by the Chief Coroner, and will be held at Court of Queens Bench in Regina starting April 6.
Six-year-old Bonneau was beaten to death by a 10-year-old on the Kahkewistahaw First Nation in summer 2013.
Bonneau was in the care of social services and living with foster parents when he was killed.
Saskatchewan’s Child and Youth Advocate Bob Pringle investigated and put out a report on the death, saying it was the worst casework he’d ever seen. Pringle’s 42-page report included 18 recommendations including developing poverty reduction strategies, and addressing workers’ case loads.
The inquest will go over the details of the death, including who died, when and where it happened, and what the medical cause of the death was. The coroner’s jury could make recommendations on how to stop the death from happening again.
Coroner Alma Wiebe of Saskatoon will preside at the inquest.
