Regina senior grateful for donations to replace stolen purse

Apr 6, 2015 | 4:41 PM

A Regina senior who was robbed of her purse in broad daylight is blown away by the generosity of strangers.

The almost 80-year-old woman is too scared to be identified even though the thief took her all her ID, her reading glasses, a book with addresses of her family and the key to her home on McIntyre Street. Her purse was snatched from her walker by a young man on a bicycle as she sat outside her home enjoying the warm, sunny weather.

Now, she’s terrified of venturing outside.

After hearing her story, News Talk Radio listeners called in to ask how they could help. CJME’s Jill Slater and Dave Arnold decided to start an online fundraising page for people to submit donations.

About $1,400 was raised over the Easter long weekend. The senior is blown away.

“I wouldn’t even dream of expecting such a thing,” she said.

The woman said the money will go a long way in replacing what she lost. She has already ordered new reading glasses but has to wait until they arrive.

It’s going to take her a while to feel comfortable going outside again. She had to leave her home on Saturday but said she was watching her back the whole time.

She described the thief as a young, nice-looking man. She is still a little leery around men, but she knows not all people are bad.

“There are good people,” she said.

“I know that people in Saskatchewan are the most generous in Canada, they say.”
