Province continues program funding to help abuse victims

Apr 7, 2015 | 11:30 AM

The provincial government announced its continued support for central and northern Saskatchewan programs that help victims of abuse and interpersonal violence.

This year, the La Ronge Native Women’s Council, Northern Transportation and Support, Prince Albert Safe Shelter for Women, Prince Albert YWCA and Prince Albert Mobile Crisis will receive $1.7 million. The funding will be divided between the programs and comes through the Interpersonal Violence and Abuse Program. Interpersonal violence occurs between people who know each other.

“Responding to violence and abuse in this province is everyone’s responsibility,” Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens said on behalf of Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant in a statement.

“With this support, these important programs will continue to deliver much needed assistance to northern residents who find themselves dealing with interpersonal violence in their lives.”

The executive director of one of the programs receiving the funding, the Prince Albert Safe Shelter for Women, said the continued funding commitment will mean thousands of women and children will continue to have a safe place to turn when fleeing an abusive situation.

“We are not proud of the reasons the shelter exists, but we are proud of the services and programs we provide to enable, empower and support women and their children to move forward in their lives.”

Across the province, the program is providing more than $11 million towards programs to assist victims of interpersonal violence this year.

The ministry provides funding for 10 programs across the province that provide emergency shelter and assistance for women and their children leaving abusive situations. The shelters are located in Moose Jaw, Swift Current, North Battleford, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Yorkton and Regina.
