Standing in solidarity with First Nations and aboriginal communities in Saskatoon, the St. John’s Cathedral alongside churches and cathedrals across Canada are paying special attention to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.

Dean Scott Pittendrigh with St. John’s Cathedral said from May 31 to June 21, churches across Canada will be ringing bells to remember the victims and survivors of residential schools.

“We started ringing bells on Sunday for the start of the final proceedings of the TRC which is happening in Ottawa,” Pittendrigh said. “We will then be ringing the bells on three consecutive Wednesdays and a final time on June 21st, which is National Aboriginal Day.”

Those bells will be ringing 225 times on each occasion, adding up to the 1,122 missing and murdered indigenous women across Canada. Pittendrigh also said the chimes through the city are also a way of voicing their support for a national inquiry into those women.
