POLL:Local service club bids farewell to traditions

Sep 23, 2015 | 6:52 AM

In recent years, service club meetings have become associated with images of stuffy old rooms and senior citizens huddled around a small table.

Service clubs have become a dying breed, struggling to recruit new members.

The crowd gathered Tuesday night at the Prince Albert Smitty’s location proved otherwise.  They represent the faces of the Canadian Royal Purple society, who have just instituted a new lodge in Prince Albert.

This diverse group consists of men and women of all ages, from a diverse range of backgrounds, but all with the same goal of helping their community.

“We’re just anxious and all excited about this new lodge starting up, we have a young member that will act as President,” said Elaine Perkins, a 45-year member of the Royal Purple Society.

Perkins said in order to address the issues of recruitment, they had to take a hard look at themselves, and create a new identity. One of the first big changes was cutting ties with the Elks of Canada.

Another big change was moving away from their ritual and traditions.

“A lot of newer members from what I’ve been reading on is they like just to maybe not attend much for meetings but rather get out and help out their community,” said Perkins.

Long meetings have now been replaced with short, business meetings focused on fellowship and fun, as well as planning for future projects.

“After all we are in the 21st century and as you know and I know, everything is changing so fast and in order to keep up we have to keep up with the times,” said Perkins.

The meeting room at Smitty’s will act as the temporary setting for the lodge meetings, until the group can find a building to call their own.

In Saskatchewan, the Royal Purple partners with the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association in brain injury awareness projects and assisting the victims of brain injury.
