Senior crusader tackling new role

One Grade 12 student at Carlton High School has proven he can be quite versatile on the football field.

Shelton Paul started off this year as the team’s starting running back, but due to injuries on the team he had to start as quarterback and safety in the game against North Battleford Sept. 17.

Switching positions is never easy, let alone in the middle of the season, but certain traits Paul has made it easier for him, said Coach Lindsay Strachan.

“I think the biggest reason he’s been so successful at multiple positions is that he really understands the game,” said Strachan. “I mean, there have been a lot of really good athletes that have come through here. He’s certainly a good athlete but, what separates good athletes from good football players is knowledge of the game.”

So far, playing quarterback has been an adjustment for Paul.

“I think the biggest difference is being more of a leader and knowing everyone’s jobs,” he said. “I love starting off with the ball on every play as it helps me get into the game more and allows me to have a bigger impact on the outcome.”

Strachan said one of Paul’s greatest assets is managing to play “bigger” than his five foot seven inch frame.

“What I enjoy most about (Paul) as an athlete is that despite his smaller stature, he always seems to play much bigger,” said Strachan. “What I am always impressed with is his toughness given that he is not the biggest guy on the field.”

Paul said he doesn’t care about personal success; he just wants them to do well as a team.

“Football is the ultimate team sport so I don’t have any individual goals,” he explained. “I just work hard on every play and do my best to put our team in position to be successful.”

Carlton’s next home game is Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Max Clunie Field.
