Playing in a game of giants, Wolfpack fullback Gareth O’Brien has no fear
TORONTO — Playing fullback in rugby league requires a wide skill set.
For Toronto Wolfpack coach Brian McDermott, a fullback is usually the fittest player on the field because of the metres he has to cover as the last line of defence. He has to be able to catch a high ball “under intense pressure” and read opposition attacks so he can marshal his defenders.
“But you’ve got to be really brave, you’ve got to really tough as well,” McDermott added. “It’s not a position that you can play in a dinner jacket. You’ve got to be prepared to get up and put your beak back round and carry on.”
Wolfpack fullback Gareth (Gaz) O’Brien, who marks his 200th career game Saturday when Toronto hosts Halifax RLFC, ticks all the boxes.
