A long-time Prince Albert city councillor who went on to become mayor in the early 2000s has died.

Jim Stiglitz’s death came after a short illness early Thursday morning according to various people who knew him.

He served on city council for three consecutive terms from 1994 until 2003. He then became mayor and served in that capacity for one term, until 2006.

He wasn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty – Arne Lindberg

Family friend Arne Lindberg, who was on the council table with Stiglitz, said he first got to know him in 1980 when he was a manager of a building and Stiglitz was a tenant.

“He was a blue collar lunch pail kind of mayor, “Lindberg said. “He identified really well with the working class guy and it was reciprocal. He didn’t shy away from anything.”

Lindberg added Stiglitz was very community-minded.

“If there was something for the betterment of the city or a cause he believed in strongly, he’d be right up to his elbows getting involved in the work. He wasn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty.”

Stiglitz was heavily involved in the P.A. Winter Festival among his various volunteer community efforts.

Lee Atkinson also served with Stiglitz when he was a councillor and mayor and remembered him for his inclusionary style.

“He was someone who encouraged everyone to participate, everyone’s voice around the table was heard, and decisions were made with collective input,” Atkinson said.

He said Stiglitz worked in the correctional system with youth and even after he became mayor he didn’t change from the regular guy he was.

“He was still himself. He could relate to hard working people earning a living and just getting by. I think he could understand the implications of tax and water bill increases and how much those things affect the common person,” Atkinson said.
