UPDATE: P.A. Police website breached by hacker

UPDATE: Prince Albert Police said they have confirmed no privacy breach occurred when their website was hacked this morning.

Sgt. Travis Willie said the website breach had a minimal impact on the department’s operations. All the information on the website was public knowledge, he said, and no personal data or police files were stored on the site.

Willie said this is the first time the police have been hacked. The hacker’s message has been removed, and Willie said their IT staff are currently working to restore the website and taking proactive measures to prevent any further breaches.

The group responsible has been in the media recently due to other hacking incidents, and Willie said the police force will not comment on the group to prevent them from receiving attention in the media.

“This incident serves as a reminder to the public that agencies and individuals can be vulnerable,” Deputy Police Chief Jeff Rowden said.

Prince Albert Police Service is working to restore their website after it was breached by an unknown party this morning.

This morning papolice.ca displayed a sinister message referencing the Islamic State instead of the police service’s website. In the background, a voice can be heard speaking in a foreign language.

“Hacked by Team System Dz,” the website read this morning. “I Love Islamic state.”

Police Chief Troy Cooper said the department’s IT staff is aware of the website breach and are currently working to correct it. Cooper said the breach will have no impact on the department’s operations.

“This is merely a website contamination and has no connection to police operations or data,” Cooper said.

The police service said more information on the hack will be released later today.
