St. Mary captures 5A volleyball city title in enemy territory

The St. Mary Marauders senior girls volleyball team took back the 5A city championship from their crosstown rivals on Tuesday night.

In front of a lively and packed crowd at Carlton Comprehensive High School, the annual matchup between the two powerhouse programs wrote a new chapter in their history with this one going in favour of the Marauders, 3-2 over the Crusaders.

The victory comes at a time when everything is starting to click, according to head coach Shaun Hunko.

“At the start of the year, [Carlton] had the edge. They won the first two matches against us and then we closed the gap. The girls have been working really hard and we’ve been able to come out on the winning side the last two time we played them.”

The most recent time the rivals met was just last weekend at the Guardian Invitational at St. Joseph High School in Saskatoon, which saw St. Mary beat Carlton in the gold medal game, 2-0 (25-18, 25-21).

Having lost twice in meaningful games within the last week to the same team, Carlton coach Tori Glynn said the girls see it as an opportunity to iron out some kinks ahead of the 5A regional tournament.

“I think we showed a lot of heart and compete this evening,” said Glynn. “I was really proud of the defence that we played and the ability to push through key times in the match.”

Carlton had the upper hand to begin the game after taking the first set narrowly, before St. Mary rallied in the second set getting out to a 20-6 lead at one point. While the Crusaders did get some points back, the Marauders still won the set, 25-13.

Sets three and four were a dog fight, with either set coming down to the last serves. Carlton took the third set 25-23, and St. Mary won fourth set 26-24 to force a deciding fifth set.

There, things were only getting more exciting.

With Carlton up 8-7 during the side change, St. Mary went on a 7-1 run to put the Crusaders on match point at 14-9. Against the odds, Carlton rallied and forced a tie which began a stalemate. The next 16 points went back and forth between either team until it was 22-22.

A serve from St. Mary was mishandled by Carlton on the ensuing recovery which gave the Marauders the edge. The next serve was played right, but the second touch hit the ball out of bounds which gave the final point, and the 3-2 win, to St. Mary.

The 5A Regional tournament is set for the weekend of Nov. 5 in Warman, followed by provincials in Moose Jaw the weekend after.
