Province provides $145,000 for upgrades to veterans retreat near Prince Albert

The Saskatchewan government is highlighting $145,000 in support provided since 2021-22 to River Valley Resilience Retreat for improvements at its permanent facility near St. Louis, south of Prince Albert.

Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Alana Ross, the MLA for Prince Albert Carlton, joined fellow legislators and Royal Canadian Legion members at the retreat Sunday to mark the completion of projects that included accessibility renovations and building construction.

“Our veterans service clubs and organizations like River Valley Resilience Retreat do important work supporting veterans and their families,” Ross said. “It is rewarding to see how this funding is helping improve facilities and support the work RVRR is doing for veterans, their families and others in the community.”

The funding is part of a $1.45-million provincewide allocation to 64 Royal Canadian Legion branches and other veterans organizations.

River Valley Resilience Retreat is run by volunteers and provides peer-based programs for veterans, first responders, emergency services personnel and their families.

RVRR executive director Michelle McKeaveney said the organization’s programming has a wide reach, particularly when its ripple effect throughout the community is considered.

“As an organization, we are all connected to veterans — whether it’s a board member, a family member or a volunteer,” McKeaveney said.

“Lived-experience leadership is central to our credibility, and the support from the Saskatchewan Veteran Services Grant has been vital in helping us provide a safe, secluded and serene space for veterans and active service members to rest, recharge and restore.”

On Saturday, Prince Albert hosted Saskatchewan’s only Canadian Walk for Veterans event at Kinsmen Park. McKeaveney also helped organize the local walk.
