The list includes local schools and communities like Carlton, Rosthern Junior College (RJC), William Mason (Choiceland), and Waldheim, and some from a little further away like Melfort, Carpenter (Meadow Lake), John Paul II (North Battleford), Centennial (Saskatoon), Warman, Lloydminster, Clavet, Kipling, Yorkton Regional and Swift Current. 

St. Mary’s junior boys’ team is also competing this weekend, as Quintal said it’s a great way to get the younger guys more comfortable with playing at the senior level. 

“It’s a good opportunity for them to play at home and against some older competition. [The tournament] has been a really critical part of our team over the last 10 years since we’ve changed the model of our junior program. Having our juniors play together at this tournament has really been beneficial.” 

He continued that this weekend may be the lightest in terms of the competition they’ll face this year, as the provincial landscape continues to change and grow, both on and off the court. 

“There’s never really easy matches at the 5A level in our province anymore.” 

“I think there’s some real strong teams in the province,” he continued. “We’ve got players who are playing with their junior national programs and coming back to the high school level. We’re not one of the most physically dominating teams, so we need to have a different style of play. Our motto needs to be serving and defending, and hopefully that’s going to allow us to have some success.” 

Following their home tournament, the boys will travel to the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon for the U of S Invitational next weekend. Then, they’ll hit up tournaments elsewhere like the Colts Invitational in Swift Current and the David Pysyk Memorial Volleyball Tournament in Spruce Grove, Alta., before heading to the regional tournament in Lloydminster. 

Meanwhile, St. Mary and Carlton’s girls volleyball teams are in Saskatoon this weekend for their U of S Invitational tournament, before returning to Prince Albert next weekend for the Carlton Invitational. The St. Mary senior girls will also hold their tournament later this month, with that being played on Sept. 25 and 26. 

Competition at the boys tournament at St. Mary continues through Friday, with games resuming Saturday at 8 a.m. The finals are slated for 6:30 p.m.
