“Always offer them extra options because teenagers never really want to talk to their mom or caregiver, but they might be open to something else. And be open-minded: don’t be hurt if they don’t want to talk to you, just find them what they need.” 

Penner said that they chose yellow as a theme to represent the event and what it stands for. 

“It’s bright and it stands out, kind of like the orange Every Child Matters shirt and they chose yellow because it’s another bright one. It’s going to stand out and it’s going to start conversations.” 

The event featured drumming from the Woodland Cree Singers as well as traditional dancing demonstrations, followed by some stories and words from people who have experienced their own levels of bullying. Members from BRP Can-Am were on hand for the event, including David Ostapiw.

Ostapiw, a social media personality and ambassador to Can-Am, said they jumped at the chance when BRP’s team asked them to present the cheque. 

“We hope that this money will help the outreach as they do so much positive in our community. We hope you guys put that to good use, and we know you will.” 

When asked what someone could do if they want to speak out but feel sheltered, Penner said that there’s always someone to talk to, especially at Prince Albert Outreach. 

“If you’re not comfortable with one staff member there’s always another staff member to help. We’re all a little bit different and we all have a different group of kids that we work with, and we can’t pick and choose for everybody but reach out. Also if you like texting there’s a texting app it’s big right now online, there’s kids help phone, there’s a suicide crisis intervention line, and we actually do have a therapist that is in our office, so sometimes we have that.”
