‘You’ve been through a traumatic experience’: girl receives probation after fatal hit-and-run

A teenage girl who had travelled to Prince Albert with some friends to pick up some fast food, was on her way home and driving in pitch black conditions when she struck and killed a man who was walking in the middle of the highway.

Panicking and scared, she then drove the rest of the way home before calling police.

Those details were shared Monday afternoon during a sentencing hearing at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

The girl, who was 17 at the time of the collision, and who had previously entered a guilty plea to failing to stop after an accident causing death, received 15 months probation which includes a curfew, driving prohibition and 100 hours of community service. As per the youth criminal justice, she cannot be identified.

The collision occurred in the early morning hours of May 20, 2025, near MacDowall. The vehicle involved was recovered the following day at Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation.

The victim, who was identified in court as Boden Bilhous, was from Europe but working in Saskatchewan, according to Crown Prosecutor Kristen Hubbard.

There was no other information shared about him, and no victim impact statement. The man’s employer helped police with identification.

According to the agreed statement of facts read in court, the girl attempted to swerve but had only seconds to react.

“It was just a series of unfortunate events,” Hubbard said.

The young girl was supported in the courtroom by her grandfather, and was very emotional as the details were read aloud. Legal aid lawyer Terra Lennox-Zepp stated the girl expressed deep regret and has difficulty discussing what happened.

Observing the girl’s emotional state, Judge Daunt reminded her she was not being sentenced for the collision, only fleeing the scene.

“I can completely understand how this happened,” she told the girl. “You’ve been through a traumatic experience.”
