More than 2,000 drivers and passengers were charged, suspended, ticketed or warned by police in Saskatchewan during Canada Road Safety Week.

According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, police from various agencies stopped 5,271 vehicles around the province between May 12 and May 18 during their annual traffic blitz, focusing on removing dangerous drivers from the roads and reminding everyone to drive safely.

The Mounties said 45 drivers were charged with alcohol-impaired driving, while five were charged with drug-impaired driving. A total of 58 drivers had their licences suspended for alcohol, while 39 suspensions were handed out for drug use.

Police said 1,594 drivers were ticketed or warned for aggressive driving, a category which includes speeding, unsafe passing, following too closely and stunting.

The week saw 167 drivers ticketed or warned for distracted driving, while 105 drivers and passengers were ticketed or warned for failing to wear a seatbelt or wearing it improperly.

Lee Knelsen, the RCMP inspector in charge of traffic services in the province, said police found a safety concern in about 40 per cent of the vehicles stopped during the week.

“This is too high. That’s why initiatives like Canada Road Safety Week are as important as ever,” Knelsen said in a statement.

“While we charged, suspended, ticketed or warned 2,013 drivers, we also saw a lot of drivers who were demonstrating safe driving behaviours – thank you for helping to keep our roads safe.”
