Before the suspension was announced, the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League issued a statement condemning threats and abusive messages directed at Tourigny on social media.

“Jordan Tourigny made a regrettable play in the third period, one he deeply regrets,” the league said. “However, the hate, threats, and violent messages being directed at him on social media have absolutely no place in our game or in our community.”

“Our players are young athletes between the ages of 16 and 20,” the statement continued. “They deserve respect and support, even in difficult moments. Hockey is a game. Please treat these players with dignity.”

Tourigny joined Chicoutimi earlier this season after spending parts of five seasons with the Shawinigan Cataractes, where he served as captain and helped the club win a QMJHL title in 2022. He represented Canada at the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and attended NHL development camps with Winnipeg and Minnesota.

The right-shot defenceman committed to Northeastern University in January and is expected to join the Huskies for the 2026-27 season.

Kitchener finished round-robin play undefeated at 3-0 and advanced directly to Sunday’s championship game.

Chicoutimi finished 1-2 and awaited the result of Wednesday night’s game between Everett and host Kelowna to learn its semifinal fate.
