Raiders start road swing with win in Lethbridge

The Prince Albert Raiders have been enjoying home cooking for a while now, and on Wednesday they started their seven game road swing with a stop against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The Raiders started the game strong and weathered a late pushback to earn a 2-1 win.

The Raiders got the first goal of the game at the 7:27 mark on a great passing play. Aiden Oiring entered the zone down the left wall and stopped just inside the blueline, letting the rush go by him. He found Owen Corkish on the middle, who then quickly passed to Hubert Clarke stepping up into the play, and Clarke then sent a great cross ice pass to Brayden Dube who tucked in his sixth of the season.

The Raiders put on a ton of pressure in the back half of the first period, but Koen Cleaver in goal made some great saves. Late in the period, Justice Christensen joined the rush and was denied on the chance in tight, but he followed the rebound behind the net and into the corner before throwing one of the biggest hits of the season on Grady Pichette.

After 1: Raiders 2 – 1 Hurricanes, shots 15-5 Raiders

At the 6:01 mark of the second, the Raiders got on the board again. It started with Alisher Sarkenov who sent a hard pass from centre ahead for the young Connor Howe crossing the blueline towards the right, and he fought through traffic to maintain possession for a moment. The puck came free to Jackson Kostiuk, who was the best forward on the ice in the first period, and he was rewarded for his efforts when he used a screen in the slot and fired home his second of the season.

The Hurricanes would get it back before the end of the period at 13:25 when Nathan Maloney stole the puck at centre and sent it ahead for Owen Berge on a 2-on-1. He fanned on the shot, but it took an odd bounce in front of Michal Orsulak and came to a streaking Shane Smith who was able to take advantage of the open net.

After 2: Raiders 2 – 1 Hurriances, shots 15-10 Hurricanes, 25-20 Raiders overall

The Hurricanes had the only powerplay of the game through the first two periods, but the Raiders kept them at bay. Halfway through the third though, the Raiders got a powerplay of their own, but again Cleaver was able to make some big saves to keep his team in it.

With just over two minutes left, the Hurricanes pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker, but the Raiders were able to use their faceoff dominance to their advantage by icing the puck a couple of times to get some rest for the forwards on the ice, and that lead to the Raiders closing out the game with another win.

Michal Orsulak was great in net for the Raiders again, even playing a portion of the third period with Dimitri Fortin’s mask after taking a shot off the face. He made every stop that was expected of him, a couple great ones, and the only goal that did get by him was on a broken play.

For the first time this season, Riley Boychuk did not pick up a point and will see his point streak come to an end at 13 games. It’s the second longest point streak to start the season only behind Cooper Gizowski of the Prince George Cougars who made it to 14 games.

Jackson Kostiuk’s goal was his second of the season, but first to beat a goaltender this year after potting his first of the season on an empty net.

16-year-old Kyle Obobaifo joined the Raiders for his third straight game and played well, but after the game he was picked up and will now return to Calgary to continue his season in the AEHL (Alberta AAA).

The Raiders will have Thursday off to travel over the U.S. border before a Friday night matchup against the Spokane Chiefs.
