Failed robbery attempt and shooting results in five year sentence

A woman who was shot in the face by the man she was attempting to rob, has received a five year prison sentence.

Marissa Bird, 37, appeared Friday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court. Guilty pleas were entered to robbery and several charges related to breaching conditions of both a probation order and a weapons prohibition order. With remand credit she has about three years and nine months left to serve.

On May 22, 2025, a man arrived at the police station and said a woman attempted to rob him at gunpoint. Bird fired at the man, missed, and then during the altercation he managed to grab the gun and shot her.

He also admitted he had the firearm with him. Patrol members arrested the man and seized the revolver.

Shortly after, officers located Marissa Bird and she was taken to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, but was arrested after she was discharged.

At the time of the offence, she was on probation, having just completed a seven-and-a-half-year sentence for manslaughter. When asked in court if she had anything to say, Bird apologized.

In March of 2023, she was sentenced for the death of Brett Ledoux, who died by way of a gunshot wound to the head.

At the time of the sentencing, Bird had roughly eighteen months remaining, but upon her release from custody, would be on probation for another three years and prohibited for life from owning or possessing any weapons.

The man arrested after the incident was charged; however, he was later granted a stay of proceedings as he was acting out of self-defence.
