Beddome family affair in this year’s PA Sports Hall of Fame

Feb 6, 2013 | 10:01 AM

It’s a family affair this year in the 2013 Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame (PASHOF), as four family members of the Beddome family will be recognized in this year’s inductees.

Three of them were on the 1948 Royal Hilltops Fastball team as brothers Calvin, Chester and Ed all played big parts in winning the Prince Albert Men’s League championship, the Fraser Cup that year.

“We’re all a year and a half apart,” said Calvin during the official announcement Tuesday at the Ches Leach Lounge. “I was pitching, Chester was catching and Ed was out in left field. We played together since day one, since we were kids.

“We’re still alive, Chester’s 88. It’s good to be able to do it.”
Calvin pitched a complete game in the finals against the Riverside Royals and scored the winning run in a 2-1 game.
Although the game was about 65 years ago, he still recalls the final inning where he hit a double and scored from second off Wilfred Poulin’s walk-off hit over first-base.

“That finished everything,” said Calvin, whose face reddened as he smiled. “That was the end of the game.

“The only disappointing part was the coach from the other team had to give us the trophy. I felt sorry for him giving that up. That’s progress I guess.”

Calvin’s nephew and Ed’s son, Garth, is also being recognized he represented Prince Albert Minor Softball, receiving the first ever Association of the Year award given out by the PASHOF.

Garth said Ed, Calvin and Chester all played parts in getting him involved with sports in the city, both in playing various sports, as well as coaching and doing other volunteer work with softball.

“They encouraged us to be in sports,” said Garth, who has coached and helped organize major tournaments for a number of years. “They were the ones that drove us to hockey. Personally when I was growing up, there wasn’t a lot of softball around at that point in time we were involved in other sports but once my kids got older and able to play ball, very much were they encouraged to play.”

Garth encouraged a lot more than just his own kids to play softball as he represented the Prince Albert Minor Softball.

“It’s something that’s made our community better, made our citizens better and it’s a worthwhile organization that I hope keeps on for many, many years,” said Garth. “As any team sport, it’s been something very worthwhile for the kids that have been involved and it’s involved thousands and thousands and thousands of kids because it’s been around for so long.”

Garth isn’t presently involved with PA minor softball, but shared his admiration for several executives including current board member Denise Henderson, who’s the Softball Saskatchewan representative and has spent many an hour in the stands.

Softball has been played in Prince Albert ever since the 1930s, some say even a decade earlier. George ‘Pop’ Jordan is credited with creating the first teams in the area.

Tuesday’s ceremony was an announcement to introduce the winners for the 23rd Annual Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame Banquet, which will take place Apr. 20.

Here are the rest of the inductees for this year.

Sherry Anderson, athlete, curling

Anderson is the lone athlete in this year’s crop of inductees and is still very active in the sport of curling, playing third for Stefanie Lawton’s Saskatoon rink. Lawton’s rink was knocked out in the finals of provincials this year.

As a skip, Anderson won four provincial titles in 2004, 2002, 1995 and 1994. Out of the 20 provincial championships she’s been in, Anderson reached the finals 11 times.

At the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Anderson’s best finished came in her first in 1994, finishing in third place back when it was called the ‘Scott’ Tournament of Hearts.

Barry Mihilewicz, builder, football

Mihilewicz helped form the Prince Albert Football Officials Association, which was crucial in growing football in Prince Albert. Thanks to Mihilewicz, the Saskatchewan High School Football League can field local officials to work games in Prince Albert, instead of sending referees from Saskatoon.

Mihilewicz has mentored many officials all the way up to Level 3, allowing them to work CIS University level football games. He’s also reffed games himself at the Kinsmen, six-man, nine-man and 12 man levels. In 2010, Mihilewicz received an Officials Service Award from the SHSAA.

Dwight Bergstrom and Wayne Simpson, builders, skiing

Bergstrom and Simpson have been involved in skiing in some capacity since the 1960’s, starting out competing with and against each other and were big parts in developing the Little Red River Park facility and the ski community in PA.

Bergstrom and Simpson formed PA Ski Hill Development Inc., a volunteer organization that raised $250,000 which went towards the new Kinsmen Ski Centre in Little Red that opened in 1990. They both won the Sportsmen of the Year award in 1991.

Bergstrom and Simpson have both been long-time staples as coaches as well.

Ron Horn, builder, cycling and skiing

Horn has been the president of the Rock ‘N Road cycle club since it was formed in 1987, then named the PA Cycling Club. He has also been a key organizer in various national and international cycling events around Canada, including the 1976 Olympic Games that were held in Montreal. Horn was also the Saskatchewan Cycling Association chairman from 1977-1981.

Darren Whitehead, meritorious service, Special Olympics

Whitehead got involved with the 1993 Prince Albert Special Olympics floor hockey team as a coach and referee and has been the Referee in Chief and Sport Technical Advisor for floor hockey for Saskatchewan Special Olympics since 1995. He’s been the Referee in Chief for three Canadian Special Olympics and a referee for three World Special Olympics. He’s been the co-chair of the PA Special Olympics Committee since 2005.

Malcolm Jenkins, meritorious service, philanthropist

There haven’t been many facilities in Prince Albert that Malcolm Jenkins hasn’t given funds towards.

He was the lead donor for the Alfred Jenkins Field House that opened in 2011 and named after his late father. He also assisted the Friday Night Light’s campaign to set up lights for Prime Minister’s Park main football field, as well as the Kinsmen Skate Board park. He’s also a major contributor to the Prince Albert Raiders, Prince Albert Mintos, Special Olympics, Western Canada Summer Games and more.
