Saskatchewan’s run at the Scotties ends in final draw

Feb 23, 2013 | 7:30 AM

Despite a promising start, Saskatchewan has missed the playoffs at the Scotties in Kingston, Ontario.

They came into the final draw on Friday evening needing a win over the undefeated Jennifer Jones and Team Manitoba, along with either a loss by Team Canada to Ontario, or British Columbia to Quebec to force a tie-breaker.

When all was said and done, Jill Shumay and her rink from Maidstone dropped an 8-4 decision to Manitoba. The difference was Jones picking up a pair in the second, fifth and sixth end, while Shumay wasn't able to score more than one point in any given end. Jones finished the round robin with a perfect 11-0 record.

If Shumay was able to pull off the upset, she would have had a tie-breaker with Team Canada, as Rachel Homan and Team Ontario did edge the Heather Nedohin skipped team 6-5.

Instead Shumay finishes her first ever Scotties Tournament of Hearts at 6-5, good enough for fifth place. This despite starting the national championship with four straight wins.

Ontario and Manitoba will meet in the 1-2 page playoff game, while B.C. takes on Team Canada in the 3-4 game. The winner of Ontario and Manitoba goes through to Sunday's final, while the loser plays the winner of B.C. and Team Canada.
