Northern Bears close out regular season with weekend split on the road

Mar 2, 2025 | 5:44 PM

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears rounded out their regular season over the weekend and they did so with a split.

The female AAA club was in Southern Saskatchewan for their final two games of the season, taking on the Notre Dame Hounds on Saturday followed by a date with the Weyburn Gold Wings on Sunday.

In Wilcox Saturday, it took a while for either team to find the back of the net, that was until Kiara Perrett broke through on the powerplay for the Hounds to put the home team out in front.

It remained that way until the final few minutes of the third when Marly Dumanski tallied the equalizer with 3:43 to go in the game.

The game went to overtime as neither team could bury the game-winner in regulation.

The first overtime solved nothing as the score remained 1-1 but with 4:23 to play in the second overtime period, Dumanski played hero for the Northern Bears by scoring her second of the night to lift P.A. over Notre Dame in extras, 2-1.

Annika Neufeldt collected the win in goal for the Bears, making 38 saves in her final AAA regular season game.

The following day on Sunday was just as close of a game, going down to the wire.

Dumanski got the party started for P.A., scoring her third of the weekend on the powerplay midway through the first.

Five minutes later, Nola Exner managed to find a way past Nikita Krayetski to tie it heading into the second.

There, Jade Olszewski put the Wings in front with a powerplay marker, which was quickly followed by a Peyton Halayka penalty shot goal just over a minute later as Weyburn went up 3-1.

Now in the third, the Bears began to show some signs of life.

Dumanski notched her second straight two goal game at the 8:23 mark to pull Prince Albert back to within one.

However, Exner also managed her second of the game in the final minute of the game, putting the Gold Wings back on top with 43 seconds remaining. The Bears weren’t done yet though, as Dumanski completed the hat-trick with 14 seconds left but by that point, it was too little too late as P.A. dropped their final regular season game, 4-3.

Sunday also marked the last AAA regular season game for Krayetski, who made 33 saves in goal in her final start.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Sunday)

With playoffs next on the schedule, the Northern Bears end the regular season with a 10-15-2-3 record (W-L-OTW-OTL), good enough for fifth place where they will now face the Swift Current Wildcats in the opening round of the playoffs.

A schedule for the playoff series has yet to be announced.
