A nearly two week long search for a missing man, has a tragic ending.

Orlando Okemaysim was found deceased on Wednesday in the Sturgeon Lake area.

RCMP confirmed his family has been notified.

“After initial investigation, Orlando’s death is not believed to be suspicious in nature. The Saskatchewan Coroners Service will continue the investigation into his death,” they said in a news release.

Okemaysim had been last seen on Christmas Day and the search effort included dozen of volunteers, as well as the use of drones, atvs, and snowmobiles.

“Our hearts are heavy with grief as we share our deepest condolences with Orlando’s family, his home community of Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation, and all who loved him,” said Chief Christine Longjohn of Sturgeon Lake First Nation in a statement. “This loss is felt across our communities, and we are grateful to everyone who came together in support of the search efforts. In times like these, we find strength in unity, compassion, and the love we share for those we have lost.”

Chief Longjohn also expressed gratitude to the RCMP, Prince Albert Grand Council, Saskatchewan First Nations Emergency Management (SFNEM), and the dedicated search teams from Stanley Mission, File Hills Qu’Appelle (FHQ), and Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation. She also acknowledged the many volunteers who gave their time during the holidays to assist in the search, including those from Sturgeon Lake and Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation.

A special acknowledgment was given to Vernon and Linda Daniels, who showed kindness to Orlando by giving him boots and socks. Chief Longjohn also thanked Jennifer and Wayne Ermine for their generosity in allowing searchers to park and access their yard during the search efforts.

The leadership of Sturgeon Lake First Nation ask for continued prayers and kindness for Orlando’s family and loved ones.
