Prince Albert residents head to the polls

For the second time in as many weeks, Saskatchewan voters head to the polls.

Representatives on both urban and rural municipal councils are being decided on Wednesday, along with local school boards.

And in Prince Albert, polling locations across the city appeared very busy. Dan cast a ballot at Nordale Hall and mentioned crime and safety were the big issues influencing his vote. He added the criminals don’t appear isolated to any one specific area.

“I know people that live up in the in the new areas up in the southeast and in the winter time, every day when they get up, and there’s fresh snow, there’s tracks around their vehicles,” he said.

Dan also mentioned the need to control spending and is worried about the new sports complex.

“Our tax base isn’t the same as other communities and to be honest, our taxes are already high enough. I have a son that lives in Calgary and his taxes are half of what mine are and his house is worth twice as much.”

Meanwhile over at the East End Curling Rink in Ward 4, Brittany commented on the need for whomever gets elected to address homelessness.

“Just more understanding and compassion and just more resources that way,” she said.

While most of the voters we spoke to said they felt all the candidates did a good job getting their messages out, others like Matthew felt more could have been done.

“Other than their signs, like looking up, trying to find anybody’s it was confusing. Like the only programming I got for the most part that I could find was stuff that was dropped off in my mailbox,” he said.

Polls are open until 8 p.m. and voters are reminded to bring their photo identification.

Along with the municipal and school boards, some big races are happening in a number of rural municipalities (RM). In the RM of Buckland, Don Fyrk and Larry Eros are running for reeve.

Meanwhile in the RM of Prince Albert, there are four reeve candidates and they are Eugene Matwishyn, Allan Sabuda, Tyrel Tait, and Shane Wilkonson.

Prior to being elected MLA for Sask Rivers, Eric Schmalz was reeve for the RM of Prince Albert.
