Medicine Hat sweeps Saskatoon in WHL playoffs

Mar 28, 2013 | 12:17 PM

The Saskatoon Blades were swept by the Medicine Hat Tigers for the second year in a row last night, dropping Game 4 of the eastern conference quarter-finals 3-1.

It was a do-or-die game for the second-seed Blades who coming into Game 4 were outscored 12-4. Consistent with the previous three games of the series Medicine Hat scored first.

Tigers’ captain Curtis Valk roofed one past Andrey Makarov after a nifty give-and-go with Hunter Shinkaruk early in the first period.

The seventh-seeded Tigers opened up the game in the second period scoring twice and leading 3-0 heading into the third period.

The Blades failed to convert on a couple of powerplays in the second, including a five-on-three. Tigers’ netminder Cam Lanigan continued his hot-streak against the Blades in this series, making 36 saves in the win.

The Saskatoon Blades showed signs of life in the third period with a goal by Lukas Sutter, his second of these playoffs. Collin Valcourt and Nelson Nogier drew the assists. The Blades kept the pressure on in the Tigers’ end but couldn’t buy another goal.

The loss marks the Blades’ 12th straight playoff loss under head coach and general manager Lorne Molleken. For the third year in a row the Blades have lost their first-round matchups. The Memorial Cup hosts now have more than 51 days before they play their first game of the tournament.
