A major project that was decades in the making has received a provincial award.

Last summer, the Rural Municipality (RM) of Prince Albert officially opened its new municipal centre in a subdivision known as The Junction.

That centre has now been named Top Rural Municipal Initiative for the 17th Annual Saskatchewan Municipal Awards.

The new centre houses the entire R.M. of Prince Albert administration and public works departments, the council chambers, and the planning department, as well as a space to allow crews to better repair equipment.

While the construction contract was awarded in late 2021, Reeve Eric Schmalz said the project was in the works for some time.

“We were looking for something to spur economic development in the region and particularly in the RM of Prince Albert and partnering with the developer,” he said, adding it was a team effort to get the project built and ready to go.

“We’re very proud of the work that was completed by our administrative team, the whole process was a team effort on behalf of the council and the administration and the RM of Prince Albert. Now that the building was completed and we were very, very pleased to be recognized in this way.”

Other award winners to be recognized include the new mechanical wastewater treatment facility in the City of Lloydminster, the Southland Co-op Centre in the Town of Assiniboia, the Town of Outlook and the RM of Rudy for their joint protective services.

Schmalz is hopeful that RM Centre will inspire other areas to work on how they can impact their local economies.

“We need to partner with businesses and the community members to be able to make sure that your RM and your community is sustainable,” he said.

The winners of the Saskatchewan Municipal Awards will officially be recognized at ceremonies at the upcoming SARM Convention on March 13 and the SUMA Convention on April 16, both in Regina.
