New season of made in Sask. series filmed in Air Ronge and La Ronge

If you pay close attention to an upcoming food show on TV, you might notice some familiar people and landscapes.

The new season of Flat Out Food, a made-in-Saskatchewan docuseries that puts homegrown ingredients, farmers, chefs and food artisans in the spotlight premiers Wednesday night on City TV.

One of the episodes visits La Ronge and Air Ronge in the boreal forest region.

Host of the show, Jenn Sharp, said the episode focuses on Indigenous spiritual traditions and land-based learning.

“It’s an important part of reconciliation and just general understanding,” she said.

The episode features two Indigenous Elders, Maggie King, and Eleanor Hegland, who worked with La Ronge-based herbalist Larissa Muirhead, the owner of Northern Apothecary.

“I got to go along with them and spend the day in the forest learning from the two of them and what different plants and their uses, but also the knowledge of how to live in harmony with the Earth and what the plants and the land can teach us if we slow down enough to listen,” said Sharp.

Sharp also went to Boreal Heartland, an Air Ronge, an Indigenous-owned business that provides jobs in northern Saskatchewan, showcasing the boreal forest and non-timber forest industry.

“They’re also about environmental and social sustainability, so they employ a lot of different Indigenous harvesters from lots of regions of the boreal forest.”

Every episode in the show ends with a final meal in a local restaurant or from a local chef, bringing the entire episode together.

Sharp said the show has done a great job of showcasing Saskatchewan’s agriculture systems, food artisans, entrepreneurs and Indigenous practices.

She said the show has received tremendous support from City TV, Creative Saskatchewan and fans of the program.

“I think it says a lot about the film industry here and what we’re able to do and create and the show itself just really showcases the diversity of Saskatchewan people and our products and our agricultural systems and our food artisans, our chefs and restaurants.”

Season four of Flat Out Food premieres Feb. 28 at 10 pm CST with a new episode airing weekly until April 3.
