Shooting gives visiting sports teams pause on P.A. stops, council hears

Should the three people accused of being responsible for the shooting of a teen volleyball player near St. Mary School be found guilty, they will hear how it impacted the broader community.

On Monday, city council unanimously supported writing victim impact statements that will be submitted to the court.

“This deeply impacted our community,” said Coun. Blake Edwards, who proposed the motion. “An innocent visitor coming to a school event was robbed and shot.”

Edwards, who works as a parole officer, said that some sports teams have re-considered coming to Prince Albert or have put extra rules on the players.

“This is a real shame. This hurts our community and the people have hurt our community,” Edwards said.

He wanted the impact reflected in court documents, he said, and that is why he brought it to council.

The teen was shot in the leg outside St. Mary School on Sept. 12 as he was walking outside of the building following a volleyball game.

He was approached by several people who demanded his backpack. The teen handed over the backpack, which only contained his gym clothes, and was then shot by one of the robbers with a homemade, small calibre handgun.

He drove himself to a gas station and called 911.

Prince Albert Police found a young woman wearing the backpack the following day, who said she got it from her brother.

John Napope, Michael Fourstar and Skylar Halkett have all been charged in connection with the crime.

All three having pending court dates this week and no pleas have been entered so far.
