Humboldt EMS hits the links in annual community fundraiser

Sep 8, 2023 | 3:00 PM

Members of all three emergency services branches of the Humboldt EMS took to the fairway for some relaxation and relationship-building on Thursday.

Over 100 golfers, many of whom are part of the Humboldt’s ambulance, fire, or RCMP services, gathered for the eighth annual charity Texas scramble golf tournament at the Humboldt Golf Club.

Humboldt and District Fire Chief Mike Kwasnica said the tournament is one time the three groups can meet up and have fun, instead of only meeting during an emergency.

“We can get together, have some fun and play some golf,” Kwasnica told northeastNOW. “It’s just a good way to build the relationship (between all three).”

The strong relationship the Humboldt services has is not something that Kwasnica takes for granted, he said, nor does it always come easy. It is something they work on.

“We (the fire department) have a great working relationship with EMS and RCMP and we just want to keep it that way. Anything we can do to keep working together and keep being a good team all the way around is absolutely what we’re looking for.”

Another plus was the beautiful weather, which is always a bonus for September in Saskatchewan.

Cst. Christopher Harris with the Humboldt RCMP said they had members involved in many ways, from volunteering to golfing, while other members had to be out on the road and taking calls.

He said it was an important time to be involved given that the money raised goes to great causes throughout the city.

The informal tournament is also a fundraiser for community organizations and projects.

David Mortensen with Humboldt and District Ambulance said he’s been pleased to see the money raised from the tournament go to safety projects across Humboldt like electronic speed signs for school zones and an AED for the Humboldt Legion building.

“We want to make sure it’s going for a good cause, and we’re not just spending the money,” he said.

Even just by looking at the raffle table, Mortensen told northeastNOW that he was impressed with all the community support that makes the tournament a success.

Kwasnica said that organizers have not decided yet where the funds will specifically go.
