Kevin Seesequasis, director of community development, said the Nation recently took possession of a fully outfitted CSO truck equipped with emergency lighting, radar and operational equipment. He said that marked the completion of the final major administrative and operational requirement for the program. 

“We have invested considerable time, resources and energy into building this program properly,” Seesequasis said. “Today, I am incredibly proud to launch the BOCN Community Safety Officer Program to support our people and help create a safer community for everyone.” 

According to the Nation, CSOs are employed directly by Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation to provide visible, community-based patrols, enforcement and safety supports. The program is intended to complement the work of the RCMP, emergency responders and other community service providers. 

Appointed as special constables, BOCN CSOs are authorized to enforce selected provincial statutes and community bylaws, support traffic enforcement, respond to community safety concerns and assist during emergencies. They may also attend some lower-risk property offence scenes to gather information, document incidents and liaise with the RCMP. 

The officers have completed training in enforcement, emergency response, first aid and community safety. Their in-vehicle and handheld radios are connected to Saskatchewan’s Provincial Public Safety Telecommunications Network, allowing direct coordination with the RCMP, fire departments and emergency services. 

The Nation said the program represents an investment in safety, wellness and self-determination. Community members who witness a crime or want to report an incident can contact BOCN Community Safety Officer Dispatch at 306-467-2227. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.
