A former Prince Albert Raider and first-round NHL Draft pick is coming back to the WHL.

The Edmonton Oil Kings announced recently that Kyle Chipchura has been hired as a Development Coach with the team.

For the past two seasons, Chipchura coached the Northern Alberta Xtreme of the CSSHL. He was an assistant coach with the U15 Prep Team in 2022 and last season served as an Assistant Coach at the Alberta Cup.

Chipchura spent four seasons with the Prince Albert Raiders from 2002 to 2006, playing in more than 200 regular season games and registering 165 points.

In 2006, he captained Team Canada to a gold medal at the World Junior Championships in Vancouver, where he had four goals and one assist.

Chipchura was drafted 18th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens where he spent nearly five seasons with the club and their AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs.

His NHL journey took him from Montreal to Anaheim and Arizona before playing four seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League. He retired in 2020 after playing seven games with Cherepovets Severstal.

Chipchura joins Ladislav Smid as a development coach with the Oil Kings. Smid is entering his second season with the Club and will oversee the development of Oil Kings prospects, while Chipchura will work with the team during practices and home games.

The Oil Kings play their first regular season game on Sept. 22 against the Red Deer Rebels.
