Local football stars contribute to Team North Senior Bowl win

A couple familiar names were part of this year’s north and south game for Football Saskatchewan’s senior bowl.

After the final whistle blew, Team North took the win over Team South in a conclusive 47-7 victory.

Gracing the roster of this winning team were three Melfort Comets, two Tisdale Tornados and one Carlton Crusader. Two of these six players also went on to distinguish themselves further with Lukas Steffen of Melfort being awarded the top defensive back trophy while Prince Albert’s Tazmin Smith-Windsor would finish off his last senior football game as the team’s MVP.

Coaches said this was the most competitive group they ever had, Smith-Windsor told northeastNOW, especially on the defensive said, so as a player, you go in, put your head down and do your best. Any other perks or awards just makes for an extra special ending to your career, he said.

“They put me in a spot where there’s a lot of pressure on me to do well. And I’m grateful for that, because it gave me an opportunity to really be successful. Getting the award on top of that was a nice bonus as well.”

To end on this high note is a good feeling, said Windsor-Smith, but now he is ready for the next stage of his career, playing with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and working towards a degree in biomedical engineering.

Dave Rogers, head coach of the Melfort Comets said Steffen’s Senior Bowl performance which resulted in top defensive back honours was a great cap off of Lukas Steffen’s high school career. Steffan was involved in developing the younger players and he will be missed in Melfort as he heads off to also play with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

Rogers told northeastNOW that is the nature of high school sports.

“They don’t stay here forever. We get them for four years and, hopefully, we have the ability to help them maximize their talent…and then we just wish them the best of wishes for the rest of their career.”

Also on the Team North were defensive lineman, Jackson Howes, running back, Yhuen Mendiola, receiver, Hudson South, and offensive linesman, Tyson Schwanke.

The 37th annual matchup between Saskatchewan’s senior most high school players from across the province was held at the Saskatoon Minor Football field on May 28.
