Member of LLRIB excited for North American Indigenous Games

In just a few short months, one young softball player will be on one of the biggest stages of his life: The North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) in Nova Scotia.

Kamden Shewchuk lives in the Shellbrook area but is a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) and will represent Saskatchewan at the games in July.

It’s not the first time he’s been a part of a big event as last year he participated in Softball Nationals and was named top shortstop.

This year, he will take on that position again, something he is both excited and nervous about.

“Very exciting, that’s for sure. It will be a really good experience and I’ll have a lot of fun times with the boys,” he said.

It will be the first time Shewchuk has ever played at the NAIG, but he’s hoping his experience at Nationals will help him and the team face some of the best players in the continent.

“I don’t know how good any of these other boys are, never seen any of them play so it will be very different.”

When it comes to the sport of softball, Shewchuk said he’s played it from a young age and that his favourite part of the sport is the memories he’s created.

“When you were young, thinking you wouldn’t be playing in this stuff and then you look at your young self and realize you made your young self proud.”

The NAIG run from July 15 – 23 in Halifax.
