Prince Albert wrestlers make big impact at Nationals

The 2023 National Canadian Wrestling Championship was held in Vancouver last weekend and a small group of local athletes stood toe-to-toe with the country’s best.

Represented by six athletes, the Prince Albert Wrestling Club accumulated enough points to place 22nd out of 74 teams. Coach] Cody Souter told paNOW he was very proud of everyone.

“They always far exceed my expectations,” he said. “It makes me happy and they all have fun.”

The results

At last year’s Nationals, 15-year-old Noah Remy won a total of two points. This year she won bronze in the U17 women’s 69kg freestyle, and also won her first National Championship for Greco. In the final, she faced and beat last year’s defending champion.

Landon Mudjar finished fifth in an impressive 92 kg U19 Freestyle group, and also won silver in 92 kg Greco.

“He was in probably one of the weight classes in the whole tournament,” Souter noted.

Both Remy and Mudjar had competed at high school provincial wrestling championships two weeks prior and won medals there too.

Kayley Clarke finished in third and won a bronze in 57 kg U19 women’s Greco, but did not place in a tough 57 kg. U19 Freestyle.

Nathan Kowal finished fifth in the 60 kg U17 men’s Greco, but did not place in a huge Freestyle, U17 60 kg freestyle.

Brandon Kowal finished sixth place in 65 kg U17 men’s Greco, but did not place in a huge Freestyle field.

Souter noted both Nathan and Brandon had very large brackets, with between 20 and 30 competitors in each.

Noah Penney finished third for 92 kg U17 men’s Greco, and took fourth in 92 kg Freestyle.
