Raiders welcome back familiar faces to PA as ICE pay a visit

The Prince Albert Raiders (15-23-3-0) welcome the CHL’s best Winnipeg ICE (30-5-1-0) to the Art Hauser Centre for the first time in the new year.

The contest will also see the return of two former Raiders and fan favorites in Vladislav Shilo and Carson Latimer. Shilo played just three games for PA this season and was dealt to Winnipeg on Sept. 29 in exchange for D Owen Boucher and F Alessandro Segafredo. Latimer on the hand was traded more recently on Dec. 31 for F Aiden Oiring and a pair of third-round picks in 2024 and 2025.

The ICE enter tonight with the best record in the WHL, along with the number one spot in the CHL’s Top-10 rankings for the second week running. Winnipeg is also winners of four out of their last five games with the one loss coming at the hands of Seattle when the T-Birds edged the ICE in overtime, 4-3 back on Jan. 11. However, the ICE come into Prince Albert on a high note with a dominate 8-3 win over Medicine Hat in their last outing.

Winnipeg is the latest powerhouse the Raiders are facing in recent weeks, as they have recently faced off against some of the best in the WHL like Red Deer, Portland, and Seattle in just the past 12 days alone. During that time, PA has also played Brandon and Edmonton and is sitting with a record of 4-3-0-0 so far in 2023.

The Raiders come into the game having won their last matchup against the Oil Kings, 4-3 in overtime. Terrell Goldsmith was the hero for the Green and Gold, scoring midway through the extra frame to down the defending champions and sweep the season series 4-0.

Who to Watch

Rookie forward Ryder Ritchie continues to turn heads in his first WHL season, netting himself a pair of points in his last outing against Edmonton. The 16-year-old opened the scoring in Saturday’s contest and then assisted on Goldsmith’s OT winner. The speedster has 14 points in his last 11 games, including three multi-point performances to push his season totals to 27 points (12G, 15A) in 34 games this season. Richie has three points against the ICE. He also sits in seventh for league scoring among rookies.

As mentioned before, defenseman Terrell Goldsmith scored the game-winner in overtime against the Oil Kings last game, snapping a 36-game goalless drought dating back to Sept. 30 when he tickled twine in a 4-3 loss to Moose Jaw. So far this season, the 6-foot-3 blueliner has six points (3G, 3A) this season, marking a new career high.

Forward Aiden Oiring squares off against his former team for the first time tonight and comes in on a high note. The 2005-born Calgary product netted his seventh of the season in Edmonton on a great solo effort early in the first period. The rookie was acquired in a package from Winnipeg for Carson Latimer on New Year’s Eve and has three points (2G, 1A) in six games with the Raiders, adding to the eight points (5G, 3A) that he netted with the ICE earlier in the year.
