PADBID to host bike race during street sale

Summer events have been back in Prince Albert this year after two years where the pandemic has made them harder to plan.

For this coming weekend, the Prince Albert Downtown Business Improvement District has another event lined up.

As part of their street sale along Central Avenue this Saturday, July 23, PADBID is hosting a bike race, which they have named the Downtown Derby, with four age categories.

“The Prince Albert Downtown Business Improvement District and Fresh Air Experience have kind of brainstormed and joined forces to put together a downtown kids bike race,” said Rhonda Trusty, executive director with PADBID. “We’re just trying to promote kids and family activities and this seems like a great idea to promote all of those things.”

The kids will be required to wear helmets for the event, and races will begin at 2:30 in the afternoon.

Face painting and free watermelon will be on the agenda, as will a draw for kids to win a brand new bike. The Prince Albert Police Services will be on hand as well, and they’ll be bringing some of their equipment with them specifically for the race.

“They’re going to have their radar gun there so we can check the kids’ top speed as a way to just have some fun,” said Trusty. “We’re going to see if we can’t get the electric sign out so the kids can see how fast they are going.”

Live entertainment is lined up in Memorial Square, and The S2DIO will be doing a demonstration at 11:00 a.m. as well. The farmers market will turn out, so the PADBID is trying to make a big event out of it, something that’s been slowly coming back this summer after two summers largely without them.

“I think the atmosphere, everybody is just ready to have some fun, to get outside, to socialize, to get back to normal events,” Trusty said. “The sidewalk sales, the street fair, Canada Day, are all certainly indicative of people wanting to be part of the community again, which is wonderful for organizers like myself.”

Trusty added it’s nice to be putting on an event that encourages kids to get outside and get active in the warm summer weather. She also said they’re looking for people to pre-register for the event and are taking those registrations at events@princealbertdowntown.ca.
