Saskatchewan school division fires employee after $5K taken

A now-former employee of Saskatchewan’s Living Sky School Division was fired after taking more than $5,000 from the division during the third quarter of the 2021-22 fiscal year.

In a media release Monday, the Ministry of Education said there weren’t any losses reported by school divisions during the second quarter, which ran from Dec. 1 to Feb. 28. However, there was one loss in the third quarter, which ran between March 1 and May 31.

That was reported by the Living Sky School Division, the head office of which is in North Battleford.

According to the release, an employee “misappropriated cash and bank account funds” in the amount of $5,024. The employee confessed to the theft and was fired.

“Final pay was withheld and a portion of the funds were immediately recovered,” the release said. “Remaining funds were repaid by the employee.”

To ensure similar events can’t happen, the division has increased the frequency of internal audits it does and implemented a new accounting software for school-generated funds.
