A short video of a person punching a dog repeatedly and throwing it to the ground, has been shared hundreds of times on social media.

The video was recorded earlier this week in Prince Albert’s West Hill area by Kyle Warner. He told paNOW the incident was pretty brutal to watch.

“I don’t see how someone can treat their dog like that. I did confront him after but he just stated that he was training it and went inside his house. There’s also been several other times he’s been observed abusing his dog, but this recent one was the worst,” Warner said.

As a result of Warner’s video and the incident being reported, the dog was seized on Thursday by Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan. Executive director, Don Ferguson, confirmed the dog was taken to a veterinarian for care.

“We’re also in consultation with the Crown prosecutor with regard to charges being laid,” he said.

The video recording was 12 secs in length and shows a person walking with the dog, and is also accompanied two young children who watch him abuse the dog. At one point, the person holding the leash hangs the dog in the air by its leash and then throws it to the ground.

In addition to the person’s willingness to exhibit that sort of behavior in public, Ferguson said he ws also troubled by the lack of response by the children in the video. So as well child protective services have also been alerted to the situation.

“We know that when animals are at risk, people are at risk and vice versa. We refer to it as the violence link,” Ferguson explained.

When asked about the condition of the dog, Ferguson had no details. Commenting on the social media video, he said they were fortunate in this case to not only have a video, but also to have a person come forward with a statement

“Without those things prosecution in cases like this are difficult,” he said.

Prince Albert police also attended to the residence on Thursday.
