Potentially scary situation turns out to be stinky false alarm for P.A. fire department

The Prince Albert fire department recently found itself in a stinky situation.

Early Thursday morning, crews were called to the 800 block of 18^th Street West after a driver smelt gas in their vehicle.

There was no gas leak, instead, the culprit was none other than a skunk who had apparently sprayed in the area.

“We get the odd ones like that once and a while. I remember years ago…we went to a small fire in a rear lane, and it was actually a phone book,” said Kris Olsen, P.A. Fire Chief.

He added he’s found himself in this exact situation before.

Whether the person who called the fire department is embarrassed about the end result, Olsen noted they did the right thing.

“We want to keep our false alarms and false calls down to a minimum, but when you are unsure and you walk outside and you smell gas, it happens.”

False alarms are a common occurrence for the fire department.

In 2020, they received over 1,000 calls with around 350 turning out to be nothing at all.
