Raiders fall 6-2 to Pats in Regina rematch

Sep 19, 2021 | 8:41 AM

When the Prince Albert Raiders met the Regina Pats in their first exhibition game, there were shorthanded tallies each way in a close but sloppy affair. In their second game against the Pats, however, the shorthanded goals were more one-sided, and so was the score.

Cole Carrier scored a shorthanded hat trick, giving him four shorthanded goals in two games, and the Raiders fell 6-2 to the Pats at the Brandt Center. Michael Horon and Evan Herman scored in the loss, while Max Hildebrand stopped 27 shots.

The Pats got the opening tally of the contest on a funny hop, as a partially blocked shot trickled through toward the net where Carter Chorney was waiting to swat it past Hildebrand.

Carrier’s first shorthanded goal of the game made it 2-0 in the second period when he stole the puck from Tre Fouquette at the line and pulled away. The veteran forward roofed a backhand to make it 2-0.

On the same power play, Horon answered right back as he was left alone off the rush and fired one five-hole. His second of the preseason brought the Raiders back within one.

Cole Dubinsky snapped home his first of two power play goals late in the second to restore the two-goal lead, however. And early in the third, on another Raiders power play, Carrier again broke in alone and scored his second.

A funny hop brought the Raiders back within two as Evan Herman drifted a shot toward the net that bounced off the skate of a backchecking Pat and in. Penalty troubles then beset the Raiders, however, and while they killed a 5-on-3, another power play moments after brought the second of the game from Dubinsky as he one-timed a pass from Connor Bedard off the rush.

Late in the game, the Raiders got one last chance on the power play to bring the game closer, but again it was Carrier who had the last laugh, taking the puck in on another breakaway and firing it low-blocker.

The Raiders will be back on the ice next weekend as they host the Saskatoon Blades. The first game of the weekend series goes Friday night, September 24, at the Art Hauser.
