Kevin Kusch got his start playing minor league baseball in Prince Albert and has taken a passion for the game all the way to the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame.

Affectionately known as Lloydminster’s Mr. Baseball, Kusch was inducted into the Hall of Fame last Saturday along with 11 other individuals across the Province.

Congratulations have poured in from across the Prairies and as far away as Toronto when the Voice of the Toronto Blue Jays, Dan Shulman, sent his personal good wishes via Instagram.

At a classy banquet in Battleford with over 300 people in attendance, Kevin was officially inducted and entered the sports history books as an architect of the Lloydminster Minor Baseball Program over the past two decades. When he became President of the Minor Ball Association in 2000, there were 27 teams. When he stepped down as President 18 years later, there were over 300.

Some additional Kevin Kusch baseball accomplishments:

  • In 2018, awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame
  • Coached six Lloydminster Twins teams to Provincial Championships. Five (5) of them were in a row (consecutive).
  • Was a Coach for two Lloydminster teams at Baseball Canada National Championships. In 2010, one of those teams won as the best team in Western Canada.
  • Founded the Lloydminster AAA Midget Northwest Prairie Pirates, the first team at that level in the city’s history.
  • Lead the development, fundraising and construction of the Lloydminster Synergy Vault, an indoor baseball and sports training centre near Holy Rosary High School.
  • Worked closely, and in cooperation with the City of Lloydminster to upgrade many of the baseball diamonds across the city enhancing the game and the safety of players.

When asked about his Induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame and what it means to him, Kusch prefers to talk about the game itself and what his goal was as a Coach and a Builder of the game.

“In the major leagues, you have success three out of ten times when batting and you’re making millions of dollars. Well, if you’re successful 30 percent in your job, you wouldn’t have a job!” he said. “In baseball that 30 percent success rate is great, so you try to have kids build a willingness to understand that it’s not failure, it’s just learning every time you go to the ballpark. I think a lot of that mindset can lead to successes in life as well.”
