Prince Albert’s museum event comes with a sporty flair

With the Tokyo Olympics having just ended and the Paralympics around the corner, the Prince Albert Historical Museum decided to have its monthly educational event come with a sports theme.

For the August edition of their Free Family Programming day Saturday, the museum focused its tour on some of Prince Albert’s important sports figures in the city’s history.

“Everyone’s in a sporting mood, so we thought we’ll roll with that and celebrate some of the athletes that have come from Prince Albert,” museum educator Joanna Wreakes said.

The last time the Olympics were held in Tokyo back in 1964, Prince Albert-born Harry Jerome won a bronze medal. Prince Albert’s track is named after Jerome and he is also a part of Canada’s Walk of Fame, like fellow P.A. athlete Johnny Bower. Brittany Hudak, a Paralympian who also won a bronze medal, had several tributes to her in the museum.

Their accomplishments, as well as many other athletes, were proudly displayed at the museum.

The museum also features many sports items and trophies, most of them coming in by donation from the community. There are trophies that date back to the late 1800s, like the Colleston Baseball Club Trophy from 1895. There are some from the Prince Albert Exhibition, which dates back to 1883 and remains the oldest continuously running exhibition in the province.

Wreakes herself fancies the small pair of wooden skates that were used at the beginning of the 1900s.

“It’s wild to think how different they are than the skates we use today.”

Sports scavenger hunt and Olympic torch craft-making were also available as part of Saturday’s events.

The Free Family Programming runs each month and features a different topic, and is funded by the City of Prince Albert Community Grant Program.
