Raiders suffer energy crash as Warriors rally

Apr 19, 2021 | 11:03 PM

A lot of the stuffing was taken out of the Prince Albert Raiders by the time they took to the ice on Monday night in a 5-2 defeat to the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Raiders just had arguably their fiercest battle of the season a night before in a 4-3 loss against the Regina Pats.

But that wasn’t apparent early. Just 1:20 into the game, Raiders forward Evan Herman won the puck at his own blueline and flew down the ice to score on a breakaway and give the Raiders an early advantage.

But after that energy boost to start the game, the Raiders’ energy seemed to crash when they got to the second period. They surrendered three goals in the period, and five straight overall to the Warriors. Riley Krane scored on the rebound midway through the first to tie it up, before the Warriors got goals from Tate Popple, Josh Hoekstra and Eric Alarie. Brayden Yager made it a five-goal Warrior run, before Reece Vitelli scored on the power play for the Raiders with 43 seconds remaining.

“I kinda figured a little bit this game might be a tough one, because last night was that emotional and that intense,” Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said. “To follow that up again would be hard, but for the most part, I thought we were pretty good. I thought our young D had a tough night tonight, but that’s to be expected sometimes back there.

“It just is [difficult], I’ve been around the game long enough. It’s tough, especially for a young group. Our D are young and to rebound from something like that, they’re not used to that, going back-to-back with that type of intensity,” added Habscheid. “But like I said, the first period was good, I liked the way we started. The intensity was there, but it kind of waned in the second.”

Just four games left

Now the Raiders just have four games left on their schedule in the 2020-21 WHL season. The Saskatoon Blades are up next at 8 p.m. on Thursday, before the Raiders will face the Brandon Wheat Kings at 6 p.m. on April 24, the Winnipeg ICE on April 26 and the Swift Current Broncos on April 28.

The WHL announced before the game on Monday that there will not be any playoff season of any kind this season. The league left open the options for there to be a league-wide playoff, or for each division to form their own form of offseason. But as Monday’s announcement explains, that will not be the case this season.

“With the league announcement today that there’s no playoffs, we had a pretty good idea before we even started, before we even got there that there wasn’t any playoffs,” Habscheid said. “The Raiders play to win every game, but make no mistake, this isn’t the same as last year or the year before. We’re playing a 24-game exhibition schedule, that’s what it is. We’re happy to play, but make no mistake, there’s no gold pot at the end of the rainbow.”
