Canadian company receives patent on soil mapping technology

MELFORT, Sask. — Croptimistic Technology Inc. has been awarded a U.S. Patent for their crop production technology.

The soil, water and topography mapping or SWAT Box as it is known, is a proprietary autonomous soil, electrical conductivity, and elevation mapping hardware system.

Croptimistic vice president of research and development Derek Rude and senior developer Srtuart Hassall were instrumental in the development of the SWAT Box technology.

Rude said SWAT Box collects the data used to create SWAT Maps, a variable rate zone management system. He said the team was successful in developing an easy-to-use soil mapping system.

“It can be mounted to trucks, ATVs, and even agricultural equipment for economical soil data collection,” Rude said. “A key feature is the automation; no user interaction is required. As soon as the sensor starts moving, data is automatically logged and uploaded to the SWAT records server.”

Information on the soil data is then used to create management zone maps.

The goal was to make the field mapping process as simple, low maintenance and flexible as possible, according to Hassallper.

“The data collected can be monitored in real-time using any device with a web browser and it automatically syncs to the Cloud for processing, allowing the operator to focus on the task at hand,” Hassallper said.

The SWAT ecosystem is a suite of products that work seamlessly together and are sold to agriculture service providers around the world, helping farmers make more informed farm management decisions.

The SWAT Box is the second patent Croptimistic has been awarded. The first patent came in 2016 for the SWAT Maps zone development process.

Hassallper said the team continues to work on new products aimed to improve the SWAT ecosystem.
