MELFORT — The University of Alberta (U of A) has announced a five-year partnership with TELUS.

A 5G “Living Lab” will contribute to a pipeline of new research and technology with commercial applications.

The $15-million from TELUS will provide the 5G infrastructure that will allow TELUS and the U of A to accelerate research and drive technology roadmaps to address society’s most pressing challenges.

U of A president Bill Flanagan said the investment in 5G advanced infrastructure will transform Alberta’s technology and innovation sectors.

“This is the sort of diversification opportunity that provincial, education and business leaders are pushing for in order to position Alberta to compete globally,” Flanagan said in a news release.

Through the program the university will prioritize research projects in the areas of precision agriculture and autonomous vehicles.

The U of A is home to the Autonomous Vehicle Testbed, which allows researchers to develop and test autonomous vehicle technologies.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its Prospective Plantings report.

The USDA said farmers will plant fewer acres of corn and soybeans than what was expected, but the decrease will be smaller than what the market was anticipating. As a result, prices moved higher in response to the report.

The report also stated spring wheat plantings will be down in the U.S. this coming year.

Canterra Seeds is celebrating its 25th anniversary by giving back to the large farming community on the prairies.

Canterra will donate $25,000 to Western Canadian charities and causes near and dear to the hearts of seed growers and farmers.

Producers can nominate a charity or non-profit organization to win one of ten $2,500 donations.

Applications for the Rooted in the Prairies Project closes on Apr. 15.
