Guided local experience at Little Red promotes Go Out and Play Challenge

More than 100,000 minutes have been logged in the Go Out and Play Challenge by residents in the city.

That puts Prince Albert in fifth place so far behind Meadow Lake, Langenberg, Regina Beach and Maple Creek in the contest that began March 1. The community that registers the most activity minutes before the March 10 deadline wins $10,000 through the Saskatchewan Blue Cross and Saskatchewan in motion.

Marketing and sponsorship coordinator for the city of Prince Albert, Bruce Vance said groups like the Prince Albert Raiders are logging their minutes while in quarantine in Regina. PA Minor Hockey, PA Minor Football, the police service, fire department and several other organizations have joined in the activity along with individuals and families who are tracking everything from shoveling the driveway to cross country skiing.

“Last year’s winner had over 450,000 minutes logged so we need a huge weekend to get on that pace, but we know we can do it. Heading into what should be a warm weekend, we are looking for a little more push to get people out and register their minutes,” said Vance.

The non-profit organization, SaskOutdoors is partnering with the city and Wildernook Fresh Air Learning to host a guided local outdoor experience at Little Red River Park this weekend for residents to enjoy. Its an all-ages friendly event that takes up to 9 people within a bubble on an educational nature walk.

“Last weekend we were at Finalyson Island near Battlefords and it was awesome,” said director Claire Miller. “We saw porcupines, fed chickadees, watched Bohemian Waxwings and did some listening activities and just had a great time outside and in a safe place. Sometimes, when you’re watching a movie at home or just doing your own thing, you may not be as tuned in to your family members and this is that opportunity to share experiences together where you are fully present and engaged in that experience.”

In addition to the quality time, Miller said being outside and in a biodiverse space is shown to have great health benefits including stress relief. Bubble groups can register for a time slot in advance and Miller reminded residents to log their minutes after the event for the Go Out and Play Challenge.

You can create a profile online and log activity minutes every day until Wednesday, March 10. The city of Prince Albert would use the prize money towards a local community project–‘Strong and Proud’–an outdoor fitness station for youth.
