Saskatchewan out of playoff contention at Scotties

Feb 27, 2021 | 5:00 PM

Saskatchewan has been eliminated from playoff contention at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Sherry Anderson’s Saskatoon Nutana team lost 9-4 to Alberta’s Laura Walker in Saturday’s afternoon draw at the Canadian women’s curling championship in Calgary.

Saskatchewan’s record dropped to 6-5 and, with just one draw remaining in the championship pool schedule, Anderson can’t make it into the top three to qualify for Sunday’s playoffs.

The Saskatchewan representatives are to finish their tournament Saturday night with a game against Ontario’s Rachel Homan.

In the matchup with Walker, Anderson gave up three in the first end and a steal of one in the second, but rallied with a deuce in the third and a steal of one in the fourth.

After blanking the fifth, Walker scored three in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead. Anderson put up one in the seventh, but Alberta added a deuce in the eighth — and Saskatchewan conceded.

Kerri Einarson’s Team Canada topped the standings at 10-1 after the afternoon draw, with Homan next at 9-2 and Walker and Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones tied for fourth at 8-3.

The top three finishers after Saturday’s evening draw will advance to the playoffs. The first-place finisher will get a bye to the final, while the second- and third-place rinks will meet in a semifinal.

Quebec’s Laurie St-Georges, the Chelsea Carey-skipped Wild Card 1 entry and Kate Peterson’s Wild Card 3 team also had 6-5 records following the afternoon draw.
