MLCN ends lockdown status

Jan 5, 2021 | 12:00 PM

The lockdown status at Montreal Lake Cree Nation (MLCN) has now been downgraded to restricted access.

Since 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, band members were not allowed to leave the community, but now they can if they get permission first.

According to a statement Monday from the community’s pandemic response team (PRT), the gates will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and all on-reserve residents leaving the community must fill out a travel log and submit it to security upon return.

The strict measures imposed last week, were in direct response to people not following COVID-19 protocols, and were designed to help slow the spread of the virus.

As of Monday, there are nine active cases at the community, and over half were from the period between Dec. 31 and Jan. 4.

Community members who breach any of the provincial health orders face fines up to $7,500.

Non-resident MLCN members are still being granted access to the beach road entrance for fishing purposes.

“To limit the continued spread of the COVID-19 virus, we notify all band members exercising their fishing rights to refrain from entering the community from on lake access,” the statement said.

The Bittern Lake access remains closed for the foreseeable future.
