Exposing stigmas around FASD in Prince Albert
September 9 is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day which, according to statistics from the Canada FASD Research Network, affects about 4 per cent of the population in the country. That number only accounts for the people that have been officially diagnosed.
In Prince Albert, a few different organizations have been running programs to raise awareness about the disorder, and open up the conversation around the stigmas of FASD.
One of those programs is run by the Prince Albert Early Years Family Resource Centre (FRC) where Barb Hunter is the program designer. On Wednesday, they were handing out gift bags and sharing information about FASD to anyone that came by.
“I think it’s just there’s a lot of stigma around FASD and we just want to reduce the stigma because we don’t know where people are coming from in their lives. So we just want to reduce the stigma and create a supportive environment and that’s all across the community.”
